Sutton is a sweet 5-year-old boy who is described by his caregivers as calm and gentle. He enjoys being around familiar adults and responds especially well to affection, kind words, and playful interaction. Sutton loves listening to children’s songs, which can bring out smiles and excited body movements. He also enjoys soft toys and balls and has been observed purposefully throwing a ball toward a nearby adult.Sutton is comfortable in the presence of other children and enjoys observing the people and activity around him. He has developed meaningful connections with his caregivers and shows that he enjoys closeness through smiles, increased liveliness, and a relaxed demeanor. He especially likes being caressed and spoken to affectionately.
Sutton has significant medical and developmental needs. He has been diagnosed with Arnold-Chiari malformation type II, paraplegia affecting his lower body, and strabismus. He experiences severe developmental and intellectual delays and has significant limitations in both expressive and receptive communication. Sutton can sit independently and hold, grasp, and throw some toys, but his mobility is significantly limited. He communicates discomfort primarily through crying or vocalizations and currently relies on adults for all aspects of his daily care, including feeding and personal hygiene.
Sutton will need a family prepared to provide lifelong support, specialized medical care, therapies, and assistance with activities of daily living. Most importantly, he needs parents who can meet him where he is, celebrate the ways he communicates and connects, and provide the consistent affection and individualized care in which he thrives.
